Baños is located four hours by
bus from Quito in a valley of waterfalls and incredible views. With
a wonderful climate that is temperate year-round and the typical mellow Ecuadorian small
town atmosphere, the town is the ideal place to explore the
Ecuadorian outdoors offering hot springs, horseback riding, trekking, rafting, climbing and mountain biking. Baños
also offers easy access to Riobamba, the starting point of the exhilarating train journey down the Devil's Nose to the coast, and to Puyo, one of the gateways to the Amazon.
From Monday thru Thursday Baños is a sanctuary of peace and
tranquility with an occasional performance of a traditional Andean band,
and people meeting with friends for a friendly chat, but on the weekends and during holidays,
the town is filled with festivities. Children straggle behind their parents with neon balloons and sticky sweets, photographers position themselves on street corners offering instant snapshots, a
"cartoon-like" caterpillar train on wheels toots through town, and women in pastel painted stalls sell everything from hand-woven sweaters to imitation
Barbie dolls. Tables spilling out of cafes onto sidewalks providing the ideal location to watch the lively scene of
Baños go by while enjoying a papaya or sugar cane juice.
The town of Baños is one of the most popular travel destinations in the Ecuadorian Sierra. Apart from
great food and the atmosphere in town you have to go outside of the town to
be able to appreciate the natural beauties of the area in which we find
famous spas and incredible outdoor activities such as hiking and biking.
One of the most popular excursions in Baños is a full day biking
excursions (mostly downhill) through spectacular scenery and past several waterfalls, some of which splash onto your path towards Puyo.
On the way you will visit "El Pailón del Diablo" (the Devil's
Cauldron), a beautiful waterfall about 1 km off the main road and a
cloud forest just off the road.
